WHAT IS A MALA?
A Mala is a meditation tool to infuse your intention (*mantra) help the mind focus on meditation. Each mala will mean something different to all who use them.
* Mantra is a Sanskrit word or phrase that has special powers to transform consciousness, promote healing or fulfill desires.
HOW TO USE YOUR MALA:
Sitting in a comfortable position, with the eyes closed, repeat your mantra silently or aloud. Focus your mind on the mantra, let your thoughts go, and breathe slow and deep.
The mala is traditionally held in the right hand with the mala hanging on the middle finger. The thumb is used to rotate the mala towards you one bead at a time with each repetition of breath or mantra. The index finger (ego finger) is not used to touch the mala. The practice begins at the larger meru (mountain) bead and continues around the loop until it is reached again.
The meru bead is never passed over, when repeating rounds, the mala is turned around to continue in the reverse direction.
HOW TO WEAR YOUR MALA:
It has become common to wear malas as necklaces and wrapped around the wrist multiple times as a bracelet. When malas are used regularly for mantra meditation, they absorb the vibrations of the practice. So the more you wear it, the more energy it holds.
When you use a new mantra with a mala, this energy becomes replaced, so it is recommended to use a new mala with each mantra if possible.
Some practices don’t wear them, but store them in a sacred place. The best place to store a mala is on a personal alter or statue of a deity.
