House Hippo Oracle Deck

Night falls, your home is still… or is it?

The Canadian House Hippo is found throughout Canada, coastal regions of the United States, and sometimes as far south as Mexico. These miniature hippos are incredibly shy and seldom seen in daylight. At night, or when no one is home, they emerge to forage for snacks, water, and nesting odds and ends.
Their favourite treats include cookie crumbs, raisins, and blobs of peanut butter left on the kitchen counter. For their nests, they gather lost socks, tufts of dryer lint, and soft bits of floor fluff. Once warm and secure, they sleep soundly, often for most of the day.
Since their discovery in 1999, more information has emerged about these delightful, timid little fellows. Their habitat remains unchanged, and they are still known for “borrowing” socks and playfully engaging with household pets. However, these progressive little Hippos have also taken to using our devices at night, nudging remote controls, or leaving paw prints across tablet screens while the rest of the house sleeps.
The largest House Hippos may reach nearly 6.74 inches, though most adults range between three and five. Babies and young measure just one to three inches.
House Hippos are believed to bring abundant luck, joy and happiness to the homes they inhabit. Maybe, just maybe… one night you will wake to find one wishing you good fortune from behind your night-stand or basking in the glow of your lamp.

How to work with your Hippos

Welcome to the Hippoverse, where tiny enchanted House Hippos share their whimsical wisdom.

Shuffle the deck while thinking of a question, situation, or feeling. Draw one card for daily inspiration, or spread several to tell a story. Here’s how to enjoy these adorable messages:

1. Choose your flow

  • Single draw: Pull one card for inspiration, reflection, or emotional check-in.
  • Spread it out: A three card spread: past, present, possibility or challenge, support, invitation.
  • Theme dive: Pick a specific focus and pull a card from the corresponding suit.

2. Reflect and receive

  • Read the card slowly and let the message settle in.
  • Ask yourself: What resonates?  What Hippo wisdom is arriving for me today?

3. Let it be light

  • Let playfulness and curiosity guide your practice. Sometimes a peanut is just a peanut—and sometimes it’s a sign from the Hippoverse.

The Four Suits

Good Fortune: Tiny miracles and single-sock serendipity

Good fortune, in Hippo terms, is finding the perfect parking spot on a rainy day, stumbling on a forgotten five dollars in your jacket pocket, or meeting someone who laughs at just the right moment.

Growth: Wobbles, wisdom and wonder

Growth can be spectacular, but also messy, tender, and humbling. It’s the breath before reacting, the courage to say “I don’t know… yet.” These cards honour quiet shifts and dazzling triumphs alike.

Feelings: Heartfelt emotions, hippo -style

No feeling is too small or too big. Emotions splash, tumble, and ripple like gumboots in mud-puddles. Messy, magical, and worth exploring. Cry a little, laugh a lot, feel it all. You are wonderful.

Connections: Connection in cozy corners

Celebrate the invisible threads that link us through shared picnics, quiet glances, spontaneous giggles, and soul-deep understanding. Hippos thrive on closeness, burrowing into care and togetherness. Welcome to the herd. Your people are closer than you think.

NOTE: No House Hippos were harmed in the making of this deck. In fact, they sincerely requested their messages be shared. While it’s well known that the largest populations are found in Canada, the Hippos have asked us to keep their exact whereabouts a secret.
