It’s nighttime… in a home, just like yours. All is quiet… Or is it?
The North American House Hippo is found throughout Canada, parts of the United States and sometimes as far south as Mexico. House Hippos are very timid and rarely seen, but they will defend their territory if provoked. They come out at night to search for food, water, and materials for their nests.

Oracle Cards: Enchanted tiny Hippos share whimsical wisdom.
Their favourite treats include cookie crumbs, raisins, and blobs of peanut butter left on the kitchen counter. For their nests, they gather lost socks, tufts of dryer lint, and soft bits of floor fluff. Once warm and secure, they sleep soundly, often for most of the day.
Since their discovery in 1999, more information has emerged about these delightful, shy little creatures. Their habitat remains unchanged, and they are still known for “borrowing” socks and playfully annoying Canadian pets. However, it appears that House Hippos have taken to using our devices at night to play games, browse the internet, and explore online.
The largest House Hippo grows approximately 6.74 inches, although this size is quite rare, with the normal adult range being between 4 and 5 inches (babies and young are 1-3 inches)
While most House Hippos have the same colouring as the larger species, it’s been discovered that Sechelt House Hippos vary in shades of turquoise. Whether the proximity to the ocean or the crisp blue skies on the Sunshine Coast is responsible for this rarity has yet to be determined. (Some believe it’s a diet of Blue Taki Chips left abandoned in children’s bedrooms).
House Hippos are believed to bring good luck, particularly happiness, to the homes they inhabit. You might discover your House Hippo in a shop, a thrift store, or somewhere out there in “the wild”. Alternatively, they may find you, and one night you could wake up to see him wishing you good luck from behind your nightstand.
